Maths
Intent
Our intent for our mathematics curriculum is to engage and inspire children to become confident in using and applying mathematics both within school but also in everyday life. We have a mastery approach based on the White Rose scheme of learning whereby children spend a longer period of time exploring concepts, making sure they develop a secure understanding. Children deepen their knowledge of each concept through the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations and they are continually given the opportunity to explain their reasoning. Our well-paced lessons enable children to develop fluency in number facts such as times tables and these are reinforced through the use of Times Table Rock Stars. At West Ewell Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is enriched by making meaningful links to other subjects and through topic based problem solving.
Implementation
Maths is a core subject within our curriculum and is taught daily across the school through discrete lessons, fast paced arithmetic sessions and continuous provision in EYFS. Within each unit of work, teachers will introduce key mathematical vocabulary and revisit until it is embedded. Each lesson will encourage children to use precise mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate their reasoning. Maths lesson provide scaffold and challenge effectively to enable all learners to engage at their own pace by working at green, amber or red level of challenge. Feedback is given in line with our marking and feedback policy. Children are given the opportunity to go back and correct their own work and address misconceptions. Use of purple pen demonstrates the child’s voice in what they have understood and which method they have preferred. Children’s progress is assessed regularly using daily teacher assessment, weekly low stake quizzes and termly formal assessments. Timely intervention and booster groups are in place to respond swiftly to gaps in learning.
